Lock Trail Trek: Discover the Hidden Shangri-La

Named after American explorer Joseph Rock, the Lock Trail starts in Muli Tibetan Autonomous County, Liangshan Prefecture, Sichuan, and ends in Yading Village, Daocheng County. Preserving its primitive natural landscape, the trail takes hikers deep into three sacred mountains, offering "breathtakingly beautiful" scenery. With high difficulty, the best time to hike is September to October.

Rock Trail (Muli–Yading Trek) – Introduction, Itinerary & Pricing (USD)

1. Introduction

The Rock Trail, also known as the Muli–Yading Trek, is one of the most legendary high-altitude trekking routes in Southwest China. Named after explorer Joseph Rock, who documented this region in the early 20th century, the trail leads deep into what many consider the true heart of “Shangri-La.”

The trek crosses remote Tibetan areas in Muli, alpine valleys, old monasteries, high passes over 4,700m, glacier lakes, and finally enters Yading Nature Reserve—home to the famed Three Holy Peaks (Chenrezig, Jambeyang, Chanadorje).
This route is wild, raw, spiritual, and incredibly scenic—often regarded as one of China’s Top 3 long-distance treks.
